Dive-boat-breakdown-leaves-divers-lost

[Maritime and Coastguard Agency Press Office]http://hmcoastguard.blogspot.co.uk/?m=1 Saturday, 13 July 2013 DIVE BOAT BREAKDOWN LEAVES DIVERS LOST IN FOG A dive boat’s broken GPS and engine left two divers lost in fog near the wreck of the ‘Alster’. Humber Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre was called by a dive vessel at just after half past three this afternoon. They were told that the vessel’s engine and GPS had broken and it couldn’t find the two divers who were believed to be on the surface in black wets suits and marker buoys. The situation was not helped by thick fog that reduced visibility to 50 metres. Humber coastguard broadcast a message to all vessels in the area asking them if they could help by heading to the last known location of the divers. Meanwhile the RNLI lifeboat based at Cromer made its way to the scene. At just after half past four the dive vessel ‘Manta’ contacted Humber Coastguard to say they had found the divers safe and well and were on their way back to shore at Sea Palling. Humber Coastguard Watch Manager Graham Dawson said: “The dive boat did exactly the right thing by calling us as soon as it realised that it couldn’t get back to the divers on the surface. Good communications at sea are vital in this situation and that’s why the coastguard recommend a fixed DSC VHF set, 406 MHz EPIRB with GPS and 121.5 homing function, powerful torch and appropriate flares. -Ends- Notes to Editors

Night cruising

What was a simple journey arriving takes on a whole new tone when you are ready to go home. The sun has gone down and the landscape looks very different. What to do. With such beautiful evenings recently my husband and I have taken to leaving our son with the babysitter more regularly and setting off up our local river for a cruise – usually with a meal at a waterside hostelry in mind. Of course the going and the coming back; when the light is dim or has gone, are always different journeys which is ultimately part of the charm but they each demand different preparation and skills. Pre-planning Pilotage Plan [http://www.rya.org.uk/SiteCollectionImages/cruising/n2.jpg] · Before you set out for the evening make a quick pilot plan of the key features that are likely to visible on your way back in the dark. It’s worth doing this even if you are familiar with the journey. · Make a note of features and lights that will be visible at night. As well as areas of danger such as unlit marks, shallow areas and moorings. Try not use buildings or lights ashore unless you are 100% certain that they will be visible and identifiable at night. · If you are travelling along a quiet river then you are probably not going to have a lot of lights that you utilize for transits but using clearing lines, waypoints and routes at night are valid techniques for avoiding shallow areas. Plus don’t forget to use your depth sounder. [http://www.rya.org.uk/SiteCollectionImages/cruising/transit.jpg] Clearing lines: Like during daylight use these to identify areas of danger or safe water.

[http://www.rya.org.uk/SiteCollectionImages/cruising/clearing.jpg] Transits: Line up two lights to use as a heading to follow or to identify turn points. These are known as ‘leading lights’.

Boat preparation Have torches ready. I always take a large powerful torch to light up buoys and withies and moored boats. Although the buoys and withies may not be lit they are often marked with retro reflective tape. I have a smaller torch for reading my passage plan. You can cover the torch with a piece of material to dim the glare or just colour the lens in with a red felt tip. It takes about 15-30 minutes for your night vision to kick in properly. So dim the instrument and equipment lights to preserve your night vision, and use red lights where possible. On the move · Wear lifejackets and ensure they have lights fitted. · Ensure you all have warm clothing – it can be colder at night. Maintain a good lookout – look out for mooring buoys, lobster pots etc. [*] If you are buoy hopping then never drive directly at the buoy, choose a point offset well to one side – staying away from hard objects always make sense! [*] Ensure that you always know where you are! For more information on boating at night and further pilotage techniques useful to you if you are in open water then see the RYA Powerboat Handboat: The RYA’s Complete Guide to Powerboating. RYA Powerboat Instructor Course

Thank you for your interest in the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Instructors Course:

Date: Monday 27th, Tuesday 28th, Wednesday 29th May 2013. approx. 8.30am to 6.30pm Venue: Coastguard Boating Education, Westhaven, Auckland.

Course places are limited so please return your completed application and payment as soon as possible to secure your place and ensure we are able to supply your course materials in good time for you to prepare for your course.

The instructor's course will include theoretical and practical training to deliver the RYA Powerboat Level 1 and 2 courses. Your theoretical knowledge will be assessed to the standard of the RYA Day Skipper shore based certificate, the equivalent of the CBE Boatmaster certificate. You will also be required to demonstrate your practical boat driving skills and ability to plan and execute lessons. Instructor candidates will be expected to demonstrate their ability to the level of CAN in all aspects of the Level 2 syllabus as described in the Powerboat Logbook G15.

Please see the attached agenda.

To assist with the above please make yourself familiar with the RYA Publications supplied as part of the course cost: * G20 - Powerboat logbook and syllabus * G19 - Powerboating instructors handbook * G48 - RYA Start powerboating

If you do not meet the following pre requests then please contact me asap to make arrangements. - Hold a recent RYA powerboat level 2 or higher qualification. - 1st Aid Qualification (including hypothermia). - Completed a minimum of 1 season driving small powerboats, so competent to demonstrate practical boat handling (see attached course content) - Gained some teaching experience

Participation on this course is not a guarantee of becoming an RYA Powerboat level 1&2 instructor, during the course your progress will be reviewed and shared with you. This is to allow you to be aware of and remain focused on any weak areas as well as developing your strengths. During the 1st 2 days I will be training and continually assessing you so that fair feedback can be given, on day 3 a second instructor/trainer participates in the course. This is so we can provide you with balanced and clear feedback as well as double checking that all key areas have been covered to the high RYA standard.

It is usual that after the instructor course candidates leave with an action plan covering areas to work on to become an even better instructor or areas to work on to meet the required standard. We (Coastguard Boating Education, the RYA and myself) are then available to support both short and long term as you start a career as an RYA instructor.

If you have any questions at all regarding your booking please do not hesitate to call me 0800 486 729, text 0275 369 807

I'm looking forward to running this instructor course for you and assisting you into the industry that I've been lucky to enjoy for 20years.

NZL Sailing with Emirates Team New Zealand Red Bull Youth America's Cup Challenge

Subject: NZL Sailing with Emirates Team New Zealand Red Bull Youth America's Cup Challenge

Greetings and I hope this finds you well,

As you may be aware a group of New Zealand’s most talented youth sailors have an opportunity to compete in the first ever Youth Americas Cup Regatta being sailed in San Francisco in September 2013- and they need your support to help win this inaugural regatta for New Zealand.

Yachting New Zealand has started an online crowdfunding campaign to help generate funds that will allow the team of seven sailors aged between 19 and 24 years to compete in San Francisco: The NZL Sailing Team with Emirates Team New Zealand and can be viewed on;

http://www.thrillpledge.com/projects/support-nzl-sailors-for-youth-americas-cup

Please Check it out.

The team will only receive your funds (and you will only be charged) if we meet our funding target, so please consider pledging to this project, make a difference and enable this talented group of youngsters find a path into the Americas cup.

If you are unable to make a pledge or donation, please forward this email to friends and family or ‘share’ the story from our Facebookhttp://www.facebook.com/NZLSailingTeam to reach others who can, or may consider contributing, and still be part of this unique challenge.

Significant other sponsorship opportunities are available should you wish to further support for these young talented sailors and to hear more please contact me directly..

Even a small contribution, either financial or by reaching out to friends and contacts will have a significant impact on the success of this project.

Thank you in anticipation for your help and for taking the time to consider this request.

Best regards

David
